UNICEF and Leo Burnett Germany take special Grand Prix commendation at EACA Care Awards 2008

Brussels 30 June 2008: UNICEF anti-landmine campaign by Leo Burnett Germany carried off a special Grand Prix commendation & Care Award in the first edition of the EACA Care Awards, launched this year. The Grand Prix was awarded to Amnesty International and their agency TBWA/Paris in the first award of its kind to be judged by Members of the European Parliament.
MEP Mrs. Ruth Hieronymi, (EPP) chair of the EACA Care Awards 2008, presented the winners with their trophies at the European Parliament in Brussels on 25th June 2008.

1. Signatures, for Amnesty International by TBWA\Paris, Grand Prix & Care Award
2. Anti-Landmines Stickers, for UNICEF by Leo Burnett GmbH Germany, Special Commendation Grand Prix & Care Award
3. Save the trees!, for Media Monitoring Agency (Agentia de Monitorizare a Presei ) NGO, Bucharest by GREY Bucharest, Care Award
4. Child in the Net, for The Polish Consortium “Nobody’s Children Foundation” and NASK by McCann Erickson Poland, Care Award
5. The Voice of Reason (Age 6), for UNEP / UITP by McCann Erickson Business Communications UK, Care Award

6. Label, for the Prime Minister Chancellery of Belgium by Karamba SA Belgium, Care Award
7. Footprints, for Defra by AMVBBDO UK, Care Award
Underlining the importance of this new European competition, Chair Mrs. Ruth Hieronymi, said:
“I was delighted to be asked to chair the EACA Care Awards as I believe that social marketing can make a big difference to the very important issues facing our society today. This new competition perfectly highlights the advertising industry’s specific contribution to society and I was impressed by the variety and creativity of the finalists. I congratulate Amnesty International & TBWA on their wonderfully moving campaign, but I would also like to stress that the jury was very impressed by the creativity of the UNICEF anti-landmines campaign by Leo Burnett Germany – we found it quite hard to decide between them.”
EACA President Gary Leih also praised the night’s other winners, “This is a great showcase for the fantastic work that agencies do, often on a pro-bono basis, for good causes and charities around the world. I am delighted that we have been able to show an important political audience the contribution that our agencies can make to vital public issues.”
Campaigns submitted to the EACA Care Awards 2008 covered topical public issues such as public health, environment, public safety, disability, human rights, domestic violence, education, discrimination and internal company communications.
Entries were judged in 6 categories: Non-profit Organisations and Non-governmental Bodies; Government Bodies and Related Organisations; Local and Regional Authorities; Public and Private Sector Businesses; Corporate Governance (CSR); Eco-friendly Internal Processes and scored according to three criteria, topicality of core message, quality and relevance of content and personal engagement.
The EACA Care Awards 2009 will open for entries in December 2008.
